The guy was an accomplished Sales Manager at an international company. I asked him when he would feel successful at the end of his career. He thought for a while and said:
‘I would really feel successful if, when I retire, someone for the Board of Directors came over to be at the party, they will hopefully throw me'.
Now mind you, the guy worked in Western-Europe and the Board was seated in the US!
The whole group kind of smirked a bit and some even looked embarrassed. Quickly he caught up with the mood of his audience and said:
‘But that’s not the end of the story, because, you know, my success would be the fact that that Board Member actually started out in my team.’
